The Core 10 Framework at The Annex

Mental health is more than just the absence of a struggle; it is the presence of a meaningful, stable, and connected life. At The Annex, we utilize The Core 10, a comprehensive framework designed to move clients from a state of survival to a state of emotional thriving. Here is a look at the ten pillars that guide an individual’s journey toward lasting stability.

1. Honesty With Self and Others

Integrity is the bedrock of mental health recovery. This means practicing truthful self-reflection and transparent communication. It involves admitting when you are struggling rather than pretending everything is fine and owning your part in situations—even when it feels vulnerable.

2. Ask for Help & Accept Support Being Offered

Isolation is the enemy of progress. True growth happens when we advocate for help before a crisis occurs. This value focuses on activating suggested actions and accepting support, whether emotional or practical, without guilt or ego.

3. Stay in Connection Instead of Isolation

When things get difficult, the instinct is often to hide. We prioritize staying relationally active. By participating in community-based coping skills and remaining physically and emotionally present during distress, we build a sense of relational safety.

4. Awareness of Personal Patterns & Triggers

You cannot change what you do not notice. This pillar focuses on identifying the “trigger cycle”: understanding the physical and emotional warning signs of dysregulation and choosing grounding strategies before a situation escalates.

5. Take Responsibility Without Shame or Blame

Taking ownership of one’s actions is vital, but it must be done without slipping into self-hatred. We teach how to acknowledge harm and missteps while maintaining self-worth, replacing the cycle of blame with the language of humility.

6. Repair Relationships When Harm Occurs

Ruptures in relationships are inevitable; staying stuck in them is not. This value emphasizes initiating repair conversations promptly. Through specific apologies and active listening, we rebuild trust and demonstrate empathy for others’ perspectives.

7. Consistent Emotional Regulation

Regulation is a skill that can be mastered. By tracking emotions and recognizing early physical cues (like a tight chest or racing thoughts), individuals learn to stay within their “window of tolerance,” responding to life rather than reacting to it.

8. Sense of Personal Meaning, Values, & Direction

Mental health gains momentum when it is fueled by purpose. We help individuals identify their core values and align their daily choices with them. When your actions match your words, you experience a deeper sense of groundedness and intentionality.

9. A Practice of Giving Back & Supporting Others

Healing is circular. By participating in service and offering support to others without expecting anything in return, we move from self-centeredness to community contribution. Supporting others is a fundamental component of long-term recovery.

10. Believe In a Life Too Good To Ruin

The ultimate goal is to build a life so fulfilling that the risk of losing it outweighs the temporary “benefit” of old patterns. This means protecting your peace through healthy routines, self-compassion, and a positive orientation toward a bright future.
